San Diego Headshot Photography Tips

Professional headshot photography includes Headshots for Actors, Singers, Musicians, Models, Dancers, Real Estate, Corporate staff, etc. In all cases a clean, well lit photo is preferred. This is your first, and last impression to leave with the person hiring you. A great headshot helps sell for you long after you leave an interview.


Actors Headshots
should be clean, but express the personality, or interest of the actor. It is important to have both a color, plus black and white choice. Have your photo printed as 8"X10" glossy's. Shots should be flattering frontal shot, Slight profile shots are OK too. Avoid strait on "mug" shots. Avoid shots with overly complicated backgrounds. The point is to leave a positive, lasting impression.

Model headshots
are a little different then acting shots. Children shots should be very clean, and age appropriate, Female models should be shot from flattering angles, with eyes making that fierce connection to the camera lens. Backgrounds should be simple, and out of focus. Male model shots should show stronger shadows, and angles, but still the eyes should be straight forward. 4"X6" prints are commonly used for modeling agency submission, and portfolio prints should be 9"X12". Models should have a minimum of two strong headshots.

Musician, Dancer, Talent Headshots
Talent headshots are may be used larger, so it is important to shoot in a larger format. I recommend 16 mega pixels, or above. Talent shots can include instruments, some may be full body shots. Much depends on how large the shot will be displayed. Shots should be printed as 8"X10".

Business, Real Estate, Corporate Headshots
need to be clean, well lit photos. The body is "generally" slightly turned to the subjects most flattering side. Faces should be forward, but may have a slight tilt. A comfortable smile makes for a more acceptable image. Simple medium, tonal backgrounds, or out of focus natural ones are best. Avoid shooting dark clothing against a dark background, or white against a white background.
